The 17th Virginia, Company "A", also known as the "Alexandria Riflemen", was a unit formed in Alexandria Virginia in 1852, and survived until 1865. It was a group of men from Virginia that were formed as a type of "Social Club", and was made up of some of the best shots in the City. They saw service in the Mexican War, and then again in the War Between the States.
The Uniform that they wore from 1852 until approximately the 2nd year of the War Between the States was of Green Wool, a 21 button Frock coat, and black trim, which was the traditional uniform of British Sharpshooters.
They were used as Sharpshooters for the Confederate Army, and also as a standing Infantry unit.
It is the goal of the members of this reenacting unit to do honor and to bring glory to the memory of those gallant and brave men who fought for the ideals of "States Rights" and the need to defend your homeland.
